Rock climbing requires skill and special equipment that is not easy and cheap. Equipment such as kernmantel (rope), carabiner, harness, shoes and other needs of these activities in order to keep the safety of the perpetrators. This time we'll disscused about climbing gear.
- Rope
The main function of rope is as a safety gear if the climber falls. The standard length of rope used is 50 m, which allows the leader (climber tops) and the belayer (safety) can still communicate each other. Ropes that used in rock climbing consists of two types, namely hawserlaid and kernmantel. Hawserlaid consists of fine synthetic fibers are twisted into 3 sections with flexible power reaches 40%, while kernmantel consists of two core and jacket with the flexibility to 20%. Based on bending ability, there are 2 kinds of kernmantel, namely:
- Static rope, spasticity 2-5% on the maximum weight that is given. Strict, mostly white or green, used for rappeling.
- Dynamic rope, flexibility 5-20% on the maximum weight that is given. Flexible nature and brightly colored.
To use the rope on the climbing itself takes skill to make a knot. Knot used to be easy to make, quick to master, secure, robust, and easy reopened.
- Carabiner
Good carabiner usually made of lightweight aluminum alloy but has a strength. UIAA (Union Internationale des Assosiations d'alpinime) provide for the provision of safe carabiner must be able to withstand the load of 2200 kg at the closed door and 1200 kg at the time the doors open at long shaft. While in the short axis position is able to withstand a load of 600 kg. There are 2 types of carabiners, the screw gate (threaded lock) and non-screw gate.
- Sling
Sling is made of webbing or of prusik tabular who serves as a liaison, safety at anchor, reducing the frictional force by extending the points, and reduces movement adds to the burden.
- Ascender
Ascender worked with rope clamp system when getting a load, and opens when raised, used to climb the cliff with one ropes (SRT). Some brands ascender commonly used, among others, Clog, Jumar, and Petzl.
- Harness
Harness is a safety device that is attached to the climber's waist. Weight-bearing function when the climber falls, so that the load is distributed to the waist strap and do not break. There are two types of harness, a seat harness and a full body harness. If you dont have a harness, webbing can also be used as a substitute for a safety harness.
- Shoes
Serves as a safety toe shoes when climbing. There are 2 types of shoes are often used for climbing, which is a flexible shoe for a foothold in the crevices of cliffs, and inflexible shoes that are often used in the cliffs that have a lot of bumps or small stairs.
- Anchor
Anchor is a point that is used as a load-bearing. There are two kinds, namely natural anchor (experienced such a big tree, rock outcrops, holes in cliffs, etc.) and artificial anchor or anchor that placed or mounted on a cliff, like a chock, python, bolt, etc.
- Hammer
Hammer for climbing usually have a pointed tail to clean up the cliff and prying or remove python. The main function is to install an anchor.
That was some major gear for rock climbing activities, some other equipment that is often used as a support are helmet, drill, gloves, hanging ladder, magnesium powder along with the bag, heksentrik, and others.
